US university to offer a medical marijuana master’s degree

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) is launching the US’ first medical marijuana master’s programme.

The Master of Science in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics is a two-year post-graduate course designed for healthcare practitioners, regulators, industry professionals, scientists and dispensary owners.

The majority of the degree will be online classes, with one symposia held each semester. The course was designed in this way to ensure that those in full-time employment are not at a disadvantage.

Natalie D. Eddington, PhD, FCP, FAAPS, Dean and Professor at UMSOP, explained that the class was created in response to medical marijuana legalisation across the US and neighbouring countries.

Dr Eddington said:

“This number is only expected to increase in the future, fuelling a demand for an educated workforce that is well-trained in both the science and therapeutic effects associated with this medicinal plant.”

“Our MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics has been critically designed to prepare students to meet this demand.”

“The curriculum will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive impact on communities across the United States.”

The program will provide an education in pharmacology, chemistry and medical cannabis delivery systems as well as clinical uses and management of conditions that medical cannabis could treat.
